Wide binary pulsars from electron-capture supernovae

چکیده

ABSTRACT Neutron stars receive velocity kicks at birth in supernovae. Those formed electron-capture supernovae from superasymptotic giant branch – the lowest mass to end their lives may significantly lower than typical neutron stars. Given that many massive are members of wide binaries, this suggests existence a population low-mass (1.25 < Mpsr/M⊙ 1.3), (Porb ≳ 104 d), eccentric (e ∼ 0.7), unrecycled (Pspin 1 s) binary pulsars. The formation rate such binaries is sensitive range (effectively) single leading electron capture supernovae, amount lost prior supernova, and magnitude any natal kick imparted on star. We estimate one pulsar should be observable Milky Way for every 10 000 isolated pulsars, assuming width ≲0.2 M⊙, less km s−1. have searched catalogue observed but find no convincing candidates could through channel, consistent with low predicted rate. Future observations Square Kilometre Array detect rare sub-class provide strong constraints properties progenitors.

Population synthesis of wide binary millisecond pulsars

Four evolutionary channels leading to the formation of wide binary millisecond pulsars are investigated. The majority of binary millisecond pulsars are found to descend from systems in which the most massive component undergoes a common-envelope phase prior to the supernova explosion leading to the birth of the neutron star. The orbital period distribution of simulated samples of wide binary mi...

Electron-capture Supernovae as Sources of 60 Fe

We investigate the nucleosynthesis of the radionuclide Fe in electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe). The nucleosynthetic results are based on a self-consistent, two-dimensional simulation of an ECSN as well as models in which the densities are systematically increased by some factors (low-entropy models). Fe is found to be appreciably made in neutron-rich ejecta during the nuclear quasiequilibrium...

The orbital period distribution of wide binary millisecond pulsars

We present results of a binary population synthesis study on the orbital period distribution of wide binary millisecond pulsars forming through four evolutionary channels. In three of the channels, the progenitor of the millisecond pulsar undergoes a common envelope phase prior to the supernova explosion which gives birth to the neutron star. In the fourth channel, the primary avoids the common...

ELECTRON - CAPTURE SUPERNOVAE AS ORIGIN OF 48 Ca

We report that electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe), arising from collapsing oxygen-neonmagnesium cores, are a possible source of Ca, whose origin has remained a long-standing puzzle. Our two-dimensional, self-consistent explosion model of an ECSN predicts ejection of neutron-rich matter with electron fractions Ye ≈ 0.40–0.42 and relatively low entropies, s ≈ 13–15 kB per nucleon (kB is the Bolt...

Probing Electron-capture Supernovae: X-ray Binaries in Starbursts

We develop population models of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) formed after bursts of star formation and we investigate the effect of electron-capture supernovae (ECS) of massive ONeMg white dwarfs and the hypothesis that ECS events are associated with typically low supernova kicks imparted to the nascent neutron stars. We identify an interesting ECS bump in the time evolution of HMXB numbers...
